Telemetry Systems & Remote Data Collection

remote data systemTechnological advances in radios, modems and satellite systems have made it much more affordable to implement these technologies into a data collection or monitoring system. We offer many options when it comes to collecting data or receiving alarms and information from remote locations or through wireless connections.

Most often when a project requires, or desires, remote data collection we recommend the Campbell Scientific data collection systems. This is due to the flexibility and rugged reputation of their equipment. We can also offer systems from other suppliers based upon your financial and design needs. Below we have listed many of the options that are most popular, but if you do not feel that one of these options fits your needs please contact us to learn about other options that we may have available.

Spread Spectrum Radio

Spread spectrum radios spread the normally narrowband information signal over a relatively wide band of frequencies. This allows the communications to be more immune to noise and interference from RF sources such as pagers, cellular phones and multipath. Spread spectrum radios do not require an individual license nor frequency coordination through a regulatory agency. Higher receiver sensitivity and signal processing help to compensate for lower power compared to UHF or VHF systems transmitting 5 Watts.

RF401 - 900 MHz Spread Spectrum Radio

rf401 radioThe RF401 has a 910 to 918 MHz operating frequency range, which is used in the US and Canada. This 100 mW spread spectrum radio can transmit data to another RF401 radio, an RF430 radio, a CR206(X) datalogger, or an AVW206 vibrating wire interface.

The RF401 supports point-to-point and point-to-multipoint communications. It can serve as a field modem/radio while connected to the datalogger or as a base station modem/radio while connected to a computer. The radio can also serve as a standalone RF router/repeater.

RF450 - 900 MHz Spread Spectrum Radio

rf450 radioThe RF450 is a frequency-hopping, spread-spectrum radio that operates within the 902-928-MHz license-free band. This 1-W radio provides a solution for wireless network communications over longer distances (13 to 60 miles, depending on antenna and line-of sight). Designed specifically for our PakBus® dataloggers, the RF450 works particularly well in point-to-multipoint Pakbus networks. (Campbell Scientific

Cellular Modem

raven cellular modemThe RavenXT-series are compact, cellular data modems that allow you transmit data from a remote site to the Internet via a cellular network. This provides faster communication rates and eliminates dialing delays and long distance fees.

Powered by the ALEOS embedded operating system, the RavenXT-series modems are specifically designed for complex mobile data and remote management applications. With the exceptional intelligence of ALEOS and its ability to be upgraded over-the-air, you can deploy reliable, always on, always there solutions for automated data retrieval in areas where landline installation would be difficult, excessively costly, or even impossible.

When speaking with cellular providers be sure to ask for pricing on "Telemetry" plans in the 4-6 Meg per/month range and do not let them force you into a Broadband service that is 1 Gig or 60 Meg. The cost is much more to your benefit on the Telemetry plan service. There may be situations that require broadband, but that is not usually the case.

One of the benefits of using the Campbell Scientific systems is that you can mix and match the telemetry equipment to better meet your needs. For example; a network may have multiple sites sending data over the spread spectrum radios to a master station that has a cellular modem connected. This will allow you to only have one monthly service payment for multiple sites. If you would like more information concerning this type of mixed network, please call one of our technical sales associates.
