Lightning Detection - Electric Field Meter

Lightning strikes the earth an average of 20 million times a year. About 300 individuals in the U.S. are injured by lightning strikes every year and 87 die. Incidents and deaths can be avoided if people are warned of potential lightning strikes.

CS110 Electric Field Meter

cs110.jpgThe CS110 Electric Field Meter measures the vertical component of the atmospheric electric field. It is used in research applications for measuring the local electric field and for lightning warning applications. The CS110 uses a reciprocating shutter instead of the traditional rotating vane field mill, a feature that improves dc measurement performance, reliability, and reduces power consumption.

Features

  • Measurement made with reciprocating shutter instead of the traditional rotating vane field mill
  • Power requirements are low; 9.6 to 16 Vdc; peak-current demand is 750 mA during motor operation
  • Reliability: Ultra-reliable metallic ground connection of stator/rotor (no rotating contact)
  • CR1000 datalogger within the system provides flexibility for additional meteorological measurements, control, and network integration
  • Connectors are provided on the CS110 for attaching wind speed and direction, temperature and relative humidity, solar radiation, and rainfall sensors

Specifications

  • Accuracy: ±(1% of reading + 60 V m-1 offset)
  • Operating Range: -25° to 50°C standard, -55° to +85°C optional; 0 to 100% RH

Strike Guard

strike guardStrike Guard employs state-of-the-art technology to address the most demanding lightning safety and equipment protection applications.

Designed for critical applications, Strike Guard monitors cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning and provides contact-closure signaling at user-set lightning activity thresholds. Patented optical signal processing and proprietary optical-coincidence technology prevent false alarms.

Strike Guard Delivers:

  • Fully automatic alarm triggering with user-set range catagories
  • 20 mile detection range
  • No false alarms. Patented technology
  • Sensor and communication self-test
  • Sensor is battery-powered for easy installation
  • Durable fiber-optic communications with connector-less technology
  • NEMA 4X Sensor enclosure
  • Lightning Data Receiver with battery back-up
  • Optional, Strike View, Windows® based display software
  • Strike Guard Simulation Software for training and testing

Many users will deploy the Strike Guard system along with the CS110 shown above.  By using both systems you can provide data and Alerts based upon actual lightning strikes and the potential for lightning strikes.

Click the image above to learn more about the ThunderBolt.

The lightweight, hand-held ThunderBolt® Storm Detector can detect and track storm activity from up to 75 miles. You'll never be surprised by an approaching storm again. ThunderBolt detects storm activity in real time, without using any outside weather information source, and continuously provides precise updates of the storm's progression. ThunderBolt provides the user with the Estimated Time of Arrival (the time until the storm is eight miles away -- when workers are in danger, but before thunder can be heard and often before lightning can be seen), and lets you know how much time before it's safe to resume work activities -- minimizing actual downtime. ThunderBolt has been rigorously tested by the military, construction, industry - including mining and oil refineries, local and federal governments, schools and park facilities.

Fact is, lightning can strike from 8 miles away, long before you can hear thunder or see lightning. The SAFETY RISK from dangerous thunderstorms is taking action too late. ThunderBolt, with over 50 text screens, tracks storms and warns users in time to reach cover long before they are within the deadly strike range. The SAFETY RISK is removed because the guesswork has been eliminated.

ThunderBolt maximizes PRODUCTIVITY. With its specificity about when to take cover and when to resume work. ThunderBolt maximizes productive time and minimizes lost time resulting from guesswork.

Whenever the public or workers are exposed to the dangers of thunderstorms, there’s a LIABILITY RISK should an injury or fatality occur. ThunderBolt helps protect from such risk by warning of approaching storms and giving the affected workers the chance to seek shelter. ThunderBolt provides utilities with state-of-the-art storm detection technology for those who they have the responsibility to protect.

ThunderBolt Storm Detector, with its incomparable technology, eliminates the risks we take when relying on general weather reports. ThunderBolt, with the ability to detect and track electrical storms from 75 miles, delivers timely, specific and continuous updated text messages as the storm approaches. With a ThunderBolt in hand you will know, long before any weather report reaches you, that you’re in the direct path of a storm and at risk.
